Speed cameras are not in any one’s good books but they bring in huge amount of revenue for the Chancellor. Some love them some loathe them, but they do have some undeniable advantages. Will you like to know what speed camera in the UK brings the most amount of money for the Exchequer, well a speed camera in the North East generated an astounding £189,140 in fines in the past year alone which means it snaps 25 drivers a day who are over the speed limit.

Drivers are often caught out by councils changing speed cameras in their area, with eight out of nine changing limits within the last year. The figures were released to a freedom of information request by LV car insurance and revealed the highest earners. It included one on junction 25 of the M60 which caught 9,326 in the last year, a camera on the A14 at Newmarket in Suffolk caught 8,964 and one on the A13 Thames Gateway (westbound) to Scratton Terrace in London with 8,002.

The study also revealed that the police gave out 400,000 fines for speeding in the last year along with 73,944 summons. This means UK motorists paid a huge £22 million in speeding fines. Most drivers fined for speeding were caught by a fixed camera (58%) while 28% were caught by a camera manned by police.

In the last five years, one in seven drivers have been caught speeding, and the amount caught went up last year by 3% compared with 2012.  LV car insurance managing director John O’Roarke: “It can be easy for motorists to become complacent when they get behind the wheel, especially when they drive on the same roads day in and day out. “However, it’s important that drivers always concentrate on the road so they can spot any new road signs, changes in speed limits, and are aware of what other motorists are doing.”
