We have been hearing a lot from famous auto manufacturers around the globe about how they are putting in tiresome efforts to bring auto driven cars. A few of them have introduced some working prototypes but none of them has been able to give something totally reliable. Now Audi has taken the plunge and introduced its all-new Audi A7 Sportback, an autonomous car, capable of manoeuvring through curbs pretty well with best Audi Engines.
This car uses handful of sensors, cameras, and laser scanners placed in the bumpers, all of them connected to a central brain which controls every single bit of information gathered. When you get ready to give control to cars’ auto pilot by pressing buttons on the steering wheel, the whole steering panel moves away from the driver towards the dash, giving more room to relax. Pulling out and pulling in is just so smooth that you feel like it was never changed in the first place.
It feels really amazing to see the car speeding up to overtake a vehicle and then slowing down when it detects traffic up ahead. Thanks to the GPS and live connectivity, it finds the most suitable route to avoid any traffic-jam. Although the first time letting a vehicle take over controls is always bit uncomfortable but after a short while, you get over it and enjoy the ride.
Dr Arne Bartels is the automated driving project leader at Audi says that Audi’s self-driving technology is really an interesting milestone and they are planning on bringing it to the market bit-by-bit.
He further explained that in the first step, they will introduce a system which will pilot the car in traffic jams, the second step would be to extend it to manoeuvre the car on the motorways. A fully automatic system, capable of dealing with any kind of driving situation is going to take at least fifteen years if not less.
