The most discussed topic in the automotive industry is autonomous car technology. UK is in the driving seat with a huge investment on projects to introduce driverless cars. UK officials have released a research study on the dangers involved in introducing the driverless cars.
The study concluded that driverless cars can be of zero percent risk to human life. They will reduce serious traffic accidents in the UK by 25,000 a year. These figures will be achieved by 2030 the report predicted.
The development of autonomous and connected vehicles will create almost 320,000 jobs in the UK. The only downside of autonomous cars will be the loss of jobs for some professional drivers.
The research has been conducted by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). George Osborne has announced a further £100 million in funding for driverless car projects in 2015 budget as several trials are due to start this year.
Some top spec cars already use some partial technology in their cars to make them safety orientated. These technologies include self-parking system, autonomous emergency braking system and automatic cruise control system.
Robert Goodwill, Transport Minister advised auto manufacturers to make these technologies standard across their entire range. He said, “New technology is fundamental to Government’s ambitious vision for our roads. Connected and autonomous cars will help us move towards a smart, safe, efficient and low-carbon future.”
Driverless cars will certainly be a start of new auto era where conventional motoring rules will not apply. Have your say on this new autonomous phenomena.
