All the major automakers are introducing clever systems in their new vehicles that can integrate drivers’ smartphone into a car. The modern touchscreen infotainment systems of BMW, Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo are bringing Apple’s iPhone products to their vehicles. Google has also introduced the android system for cars and become the strong rival for CarPlay.
The first ever test of CarPlay has been carried out in the new Ferrari California T. Apple CarPlay doesn’t come as standard with Ferrari’s standard touchscreen ‘Infotelematic’ system. All you have to do is just get into your car and plug in your iPhone into the ‘Apple’ port specially built for this purpose in the centre armrest. Unlock your smartphone and press the CarPlay button that shows up on the infotainment system.
You will then see the home screen which is almost exactly the same as of your iPhone’s, except the ‘California T’ app. All those Apple users who are familiar with term ‘Okay Siri’ will not be amused to see it work in the car too. Siri will take you to your desired destination via Apple Maps. But that’s not all, the fun part is that Siri will read out the text message which will come on your phone while driving.
The only shortfall that was experienced by the test conductors during the test were that they tried to call someone, but Siri didn’t understand quite well and consistently called the wrong person. So let’s hope in the near future, as more and more manufacturers will have this system in their cars, this issue will be solved.
