Google unveils new Android Auto infotainment interface, with Volvo signing up to fit it into cars

Google has revealed its Android Auto interface, new software that integrates your Android Smartphone into the car’s infotainment system. It is similar to Apple’s CarPlay, it makes using standard Android features available within the car but in a simple way. Google’s maps have been scaled down to the bare minimum with access via voice and steering wheel controls or through the car’s touch screen.

Android’s director of engineering Patrick Brady described the system as combining “the best of both worlds”, offering “the connected apps and services on your smartphone with the physical controls that were optimised for driving”.

The promotional video demonstrates how Android Auto allows drivers to set reminders that’ll alert them on the move or on their phone if they’ve left the car. There’s also access to Google Search and Play Music, as well as text messages and specially adapted downloadable apps.

Audi, GM, Honda and Hyundai are all gearing up to introduce this technology later this year as they are all members of Open Automotive Alliance. This alliance works together to make Android usability simpler and easier in cars.

Volvo is the latest automaker to join the Alliance and confirming that Android Auto will be available in the second generation XC90, debuted publicly at the Paris Motor Show. The Google-developed interface will make its way to all new Volvo models built on the Swedish brand’s Scalable Product Architecture, an identical arrangement having been agreed for Apple CarPlay, too.

Volvo also said that its portrait touch screen will show both its own and Android’s content at the same time, saving drivers the hassle to switch between screens.
