Ford has announced the all-new Mondeo will be priced from £20,795, and the first models will arrive in the showrooms by the end of the year. The car has been long awaited, bringing the new Ford family face to the popular saloon model. There is also a new range of Ford engines and advanced technologies.
Ford Mondeo Hybrid will also be offered in the new line-up with emissions of 99g/km of CO2 and over 65mpg fuel economy. However, thanks to the 188bhp provided by the 2.0-litre petrol engine combined with an electric motor, it feels very agile.
The entry level Mondeo will start from £20,795 whereas the prices for hybrid and more premium models in the range have not been announced yet. The upmarket Ford Mondeo Vignale trim will also be offered and will compete with the more expensive saloons like the BMW 3-Series. This upscale version is bound to cost more than the standard model.
The 2014 Ford Mondeo will be equipped with a new 1.5-litre EcoBoost petrol engine which churns out 148bhp and 240NM respectively with improved fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions. This engine is the fifth EcoBoost engine in the range. It was launched in 2009 with a 3.5 litre V6 EcoBoost engine. A 2.0 litre engine was added in 2010; 1.6-litre EcoBoost in 2011; and last year the three-cylinder 1.0-litre EcoBoost was launched.
The European version Mondeo will also be equipped with Ford’s 1.0 litre three-cylinder EcoBoost engine with CO2 emissions of under 130g/km, making it one of the cleanest cars in the class. The new Ford Mondeo will come with the option of two different petrol-electric powertrains: one will be a traditional hybrid and the other a plug-in hybrid. The former one is simply badged Mondeo Hybrid where as the latter one is known as the Ford Mondeo Energi.
Both systems will produce 185bhp, allowing the 0-62mph benchmark in around 8.5 seconds. It is expected that the fuel economy will be around 60mpg for the Hybrid and well over 100mpg for the Energi. Six-speed manual gearboxes will be offered as standard, with dual-clutch six-speed Powershift transmissions optional. A diesel model, with an auto gearbox, will be offered with four-wheel drive for the first time.
“Our goal was to investigate how to design and build a mixed-materials, lightweight vehicle that could potentially be produced in high volume, while providing the same level of safety, durability and toughness as our vehicles on the road today,” said Matt Zaluzec, Ford technical leader, Global Materials and Manufacturing Research.
